V778 retention document

If you wish to purchase a registration but do not have a vehicle to transfer it to, it may be held on a V778 Retention Document for future use.

A V778 Retention Document is a green certificate, issued if the number which is being retained has previously been displayed on a vehicle, i.e. the registration number has been used before the current retention.

The Retention Document is valid initially for a period of 12 months from the date of issue, but can be extended for future use. An example V778 is shown below:
