UK Car Number Plates

In the UK, car number plates are used to distinguish between all the varieties of vehicles on the road. Registration plates, up until three years ago, were made up of a random selection of one to three numbers and three letters, with one additional letter indicating the year, either at the beginning or end of the car registration number.

Since the year 2000, when the alphabet had been used up, the new format registrations were introduced. Vehicle number plates in the UK now begin with a two letter regional identifier, which depicts where the vehicle was registered. For example, a vehicle beginning with HW would show H for Hampshire, and W for Isle of Wight.

Then follows a two figure age identifier, indicating when the vehicle was registered. This is changed every six months. When the scheme was first introduced, the numbers were 51, and six months later, in 2001, the numbers were 01. Thus: HW51, and for the year 2003, it would be HW03. This is then followed by a random 3 letters.

Many of these car number plates can be used to spell out words or a phrase, and are then used as personalised registration plates, such as JU51 ZOE. Car Marks, as the premier private plates dealer in the UK, are the ideal people to arrange for the sale and transfer of cherished registrations.
