DVLA number plates

Every vehicle that is sold is issued with a DVLA registration number, in order to distinguish it from all the other vehicles on the road. When they were first issued, they were not dated with letters as they are today - number plates were just one to three letters and one to three numbers.

These original DVLA number plates are rare, and have therefore become very desirable. The DVLA has held back some of these distinctive regs, and sells them at auction seven times a year.
